Fly Fishing Soul Guided Trip:

Río Chubut

<< BACK

The fish: The main specie is Rainbow trout (Brown and Fontinalis trout are also found in minor quantity) of an averege size of 30 to 45 cm. The captures are plenty, an average fishing day will provide between 20 and 30 captures.

The River: The Chubut River is a small river with a variable width between the 50 and 100 meters, transparent waters and numerous pools and runs. Its margins are mainly embraced by willows and high pastures. Beyond the narrow river's valley there is the immensity of the patagonian plateau.

The Fishing: Ours is a fly fishing only program and release is mandatory. The season goes from November through March (this month's availability depends on the river's conditions). The program is for groups of minimum 4 fishermen, and a maximum of 6. The trip consists in a long float of approximately 90 kms, between El Maitén area and the Fofo Cahuel bridge. Each day we cover 20 to 25 kms of the river, fishing either from the boat or wading the most productive sections. A typical day starts early in the morning and, soon after breakfast, the floating begins and lasts 8 to 10 hours. At noon lunch is served at the river side, and there's time to rest for one hour. At sunset we will be arriving to the camping site, already set up by our team that will be waiting us with drinks and a traditional picada to start relaxing after a long fishing day. We recommend to take a couple of rods, a #6 for windy days and a #4. Most of the time fishing is done with a floating line but it is convenient to carry a medium fast sinking line (150/200 gr). Most part of the river is fished with dry fly (sizes 12 to 18) or with streamers that imitate the pancora (a patagonic crustaceous in sizes 4 to 8), sculpins and other streamers. Being that the group travels in rafts that carry the whole equipment it is recommended to do a good selection of each fishermen's equipment, that should fit in a 25 liters dry bag. Before the trip a packing list will be provided.

Our guides: Our guides are Jerónimo Cantón and Nicolás Botting, who will be accompanied by other guides from the Soul team. The four days in which we will be floating the river create strong bonds between the fishermen and the guides, a group of young and experienced fishermen, always ready to help and look after the group's safety.

Lodging: The program may be combined with a stay at any of the area's lodges, before or after the floating. The group will be transferred to El Maitén area (1 1/2 hours from Esquel) where the floating begins. During the trip the lodging will be the itinerary camping sites set up at the riverside. This camping consist on tents, cots, mattresses, sleeping bags, pillows, hot water showers, and a dinning tent, everything disposed in order to make the camping experience a very pleasant one. The floating ends at Fofo Cahuel where the vehicles will be waiting to transport the group to the Esquel area. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be prepared by the guides, expert grillers and cooks. All meals are previously planned and special dishes may be prepared for those with special requirements. After a long day fishing "The Chubut" there's nothing better that an excelent meal with friends accompanied by a good wine, a warm fire, and the river's coo in the distance.

Travel: To get to the Chubut River you should fly to Buenos Aires and make reservations for round tickets to Esquel (or alternatively to Bariloche). Fishermen from abroad will arrive through Ezeiza's International Airport and the flight to Esquel departs from Aeroparque, the domestic airport. Generally schedules do not allow to take the flight in the same day of the arrival to Buenos Aires, so you might spend a night in the city and fly the following morning. One of our guides will be expecting you at Esquel's Airport and will take you to the Lodge selected to spend the first night. The floating will begin the following day or when planed. We recommend to combine the program with two or three fishing days in the lakes' area, to have an experience of both environments.

Program: The program duration is of four fishing days (three nights).

Rates:
u$s 1600,- per person, if the group is of 4 or 6 fishermen.
