Bariloche international airport is Northern Patagonia´s gate. Bariloche city is within the limits of the Nahuel Huapi National Park and the perfect place to start your fishing journey in the huge National Reserve’s waters.
The Park, enclosing an area of 750.000 hectares is located in the Río Negro province, Patagonia, Argentina. Is Argentina´s first National Park and the third in the world, after Yellostone and Banff. It was created in 1903 thanks to Perito Moreno´s donation to the National Government and has its current area since 1934.
In the center of the park there is the Nahuel Huapi lake with a 562 km2 surface. The highest peak is the Tronador mountain (glacier) with an altitude of 3491 mts over the sea level. The Park holds many lakes, rivers, streams. The best known river is the Limay, a really big one which collects the water of the entire basin and runs southeast through the Patagonian steppe. The Manso river starts its course in the Tronador mountain and runs into the park and after many turns ends in the Pacific ocean. One of the most beautiful waters to fly-fish is the spectacular Traful river, paradise for fishermen around the world, with no more than 18 kms long. The Pichi Leufu river runs into the Patagonian steppe, canyons, runs, riffles, quiet pools, offering different types of waters.
And you can´t forget the incredible Fonck lake, at the foot of Tronador mountain, is one of the most spectacular environments in the National Park. Arturo Domínguez lives in Bariloche and has been guiding for 20 years. He knows the Park’s waters as nobody else does and he will make your trip productive and friendly.
The fish: Rainbow, brown and brook trout and landlocked salmon are the species to fish in the area.
The Fishing: Fly fishing programs include transfer in 4x4 comfortable trucks to and from Bariloche´s International airport, 15’minutes away from the town. English speaking, professional fly fishing guides will take care of every aspect of your trip. We use inflatable rafts, with rowing frame and comfortable seats for the fishermen for the Limay and Manso rivers and drift boats with powerful engines for the Fonck lake. Drinks are available and cool during your fishing day and lunch is always served at the river or lake side with camp chairs & table. We recommend #6 or #7 rods for the big rivers and #4 for small waters. No personal fishing or wading equipment is provided but in case of needing any, the guides can rent it. |
The Rivers: Most waters in the National Park are for catch and release, fly fishing only.
Limay river: Obviously, in the biggest tributary you will find the biggest rainbows and browns. We can float and wade different sections and many kms of the river. Depending on the time of the season we will be fishing resident fish with dry flies or using shooting or sinking lines, the big boys.
The Traful river: It is a different kind of water. From the Traful lake to the outlet in the Limay river, the Traful river is home to the best landlocked salmon in Patagonia, and also holds rainbows and big browns. The river is around 30 meters wide and its waters are transparent, allowing you to see the fish you intend to catch.
Manso river: We will wade and float different sections of the river. It is a technical river, holding brown and rainbow trout.
Pichi Leufú river: It is a small river that can be waded and fished with dries and light rods. Rainbows, browns and the native perch are the species to fish.
Fonck lake: Mostly, fishermen don’t like to fish on lakes, but Fonck is unique. If the weather conditions allow it, we have the chance to fish the grand slam, rainbows, brooks and browns sight-fishing with dries.
Hess channels & lake: We will float and fish nice rainbows, browns and brooks. We can also fish the mouth of the Manso river and if the fisherman is not impatient we will have the chance to fish incredible hatches just before sunset.
Our guides: Our head guide, Arturo Domínguez, and his staff are experienced professionals who will satisfy your expectations. If you are interested in getting casting instruction Arturo will help you, as he is a fly fishing instructor. He will take care of your safety, comfort and fishing success. We practice catch and release, barbless hook angling.
