Estancia Arroyo Verde

<< BACK

Estancia Arroyo Verde is situated within the Nahuel Huapi National Park. Its western border is the Traful lake, and it extends towards progressively dryer areas in the east.

The forests of cypress and coihues give way to the maitenes and open grassland, typical of the area. The landscape opens out onto gigantic sculptures of volcanic rocks, shaped by wind and water. The Traful valley’s landscape, it’s famous river, the lodge’s elegance and Meme’s and her daughters' hospitality intertwine to make the guests feel at home.

The Traful, one of Argentina’s most spectacular rivers, is home to rainbow and brown trout and especially land-locked salmon, every fisherman’s dream. Other activities such as horse riding and trekking can be done, or you can simply enjoy the silence and intimacy the lodge provides.

The River: The Traful is a fly fishing only river and catch and release is mandatory. It is 30 meters wide at some points and it has important water flow variations common to most mountain rivers. However, the Traful lake acts as a natural regulator, and it moderates the rises and the drought periods as well.

Crystal clear waters, pools and rapids, open spaces, enormous rocks in the riverbed… all the waters fisherman desire.

The fish: The river is densely populated with trout around 20 to 23 ins but occasionally, unlike other rivers in the Traful river it is possible to catch much bigger trout or salmon, around 28 to 35 ins.

The Fishing: Within the estancia the Traful river can be waded in all its length. The river has numerous pools, each one different. They are all nearby and within a 10 to 20 minute drive. A typical day begins with breakfast at the lodge. Your guide will meet you immediately after and inform you about the day’s fishing and wading conditions. Lunch is served in the dining room at the lodge but picnics can be organized by the river. If you do not have your own fishing equipment the guides can provide it at an additional cost. For the beginning of the season we recommend #7 and #8 lines and #5 or #6 for mid January onwards. It is also convenient to have a variety of fast sinking and floating lines and sinking tips. The selection will depend on the water’s height and temperature. For fast sinking lines you will need short leaders, 12 or 14 feet for dry fly; 4x to 0x, and stronger up to 12 1b test, to big flies. Bring, besides your favorite fly, some streamers, wooly worms, wooly buggers, muddlers, etc. Nymphs turn out to be very effective throughout the whole season; Small ones (12 to 14) can be as useful as the big ones, such as the Bitch Creek or the Montana Nymph (4 to 8). The Spruce and Mickey Finn flies are very good for the salmon during the day; A Black Bunny can be perfect for catching a nice brown trout in the last hours of the evening! Dry flies - in sizes 6 to 16, Adams, Royal Wulff, Humpies - are a must in the Traful for half and late season. With a Skating Spider you can have fun big time!

The Guides: The guides are renowned professionals from the Bariloche area. They are familiar with the river and cater to the fisherman's every need.

The Lodge: Its typical stone and wood built houses, set in a park of infinite beauty provide great comfort and a cozy atmosphere for its guests. In the spacious main house there are the living and dinning rooms with their fireplaces, the sun lounge with its wonderful view of the garden and the valley beyond, a bar, where you can try the famous pisco sour and four double bedrooms with private bathrooms. In an adjacent house another guest bedroom with en-suite bathroom has a separate entrance and private porch. About a mile and a half from the main house the wood cabin perches on a rocky outcrop overlooking the lake commanding a magnificent view. It has a twin bedroom with bathroom, spacious living room with extra beds if needed and a deck to enjoy the sunsets on the lake. Electricity is generated by diesel powered engines (220V). The lodge manager is on hand at all times to look after guests. Meals are served in the dinning room where the hosts ensure a refined, cozy, family atmosphere.
