CSL is located on the west margin of the Paraná river close to San Javier, a small town in the Santa Fe Province, Argentina; and within Estancia Irupé, an old and traditional Ranch of the Pampas devoted to grow the best meat in the world.
The Paraná River is one of the world’s largest rivers and in the lodge’s area is very wide, enclosing 30 km of islands, lagoons, swamps and big channels of fast waters. This mighty river is the Dorado’s home water, the Tiger of the River, Argentina´s National Fish, powerful and beautiful.
The fishing environments are diverse, open, warm and full of birds and mammals that find in these immense waters the nourishment they need. The photo camera is no doubt an obligated companion for this trip. The fishing programs usually start early in the morning, continue with a river side lunch and go on till the last hours of the day. Fast, open boats will take us to the different environments where fish are feeding. With high waters you will be fishing from the boat while with lower waters wading becomes the common alternative.
Fly Fishing Soul manages the lodge’s fishing operations so every group will be hosted by either Alfredo Zubiri, Raúl San Martín or one of our guides. Raul is the lodge’s Head Guide and Argentina´s guiding decan. The team includes local guides who were born and grew up by the river and know its waters better than you can imagine.
The River: The Paraná River flows from south to north and at the lodge’s latitude is very wide, enclosing many islands, swamps, lagoons, creeks and big channels of fast waters. The variety of fishing conditions is therefore big and challenging for every fisherman. |
The fish: Dorado is The fish, the mighty tiger we will go after. The average fish is around 3kg (7 pounds) not being uncommon to catch 5 kg (12 pounds) fish in every trip.
The Fishing: The lodge is on the river shore and CSL guides will use motor boats with powerful engines to take you to the waters where dorados are actively feeding. No personal fishing or wading equipment is provided but in the case of loss or accidental damage, CSL can supply the needs
A typical day starts early in the morning, at the lodge. Most of our fishing destinations are reached within an hour; the head guide will meet you at dinner or after breakfast to inform you about the day’s fishing, wading and water conditions and all questions will be answered. At lunch time, guides will set up comfortable camp chairs and tables, also if necessary they will provide shelter for rain, sun or wind while food and drinks are served. After an intensive day on the river and back in the lodge; drinks and appetizers will be waiting for you before dinner.
We recommend a #8 rod to fish these waters mainly because of the size of the flies we will be using and the difficulties to cast them with wind, but experienced casters can also bring a #6 weight rod. Sinking lines 200 and 300 weight will be commonly used, but a floating line on an extra spool must be part of your tackle. As the water temperature increases, and with low water conditions, it becomes more and more common to find the dorados feeding in shallow waters, and in those circumstances a floating line will give you more fun and satisfaction.
The Guides: Raúl San Martín is the Lodge´s Head Guide. Raúl has been guiding for dorado and trout for almost 50 years, so he has not only fishing experience but also understanding your every need. Raúl is a casting instructor as well, so if you are interested in getting some instruction, let us know and he will take care of that. Our other guides are local people who have been fishing the river since childhood. They know the river and will take care of your safety, comfort and fishing success. CSL and Fly Fishing Soul are strictly devoted to catch and release, barbless hook angling. We make no exceptions. All fish injured or not, must be released as gently as possible.
